Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical fat-removal procedure that you can get to reshape and refine your body’s curves. It isn’t the best option for you if you’re significantly overweight, but it can make a big difference in your body’s shape by cutting down hard-to-lose pouches of fat. You can get liposuction to remove fat in these areas where it commonly accumulates:

  • Chin and jaw
  • Upper arms
  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks

There are several different types of liposuction available at Gynecology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Atlanta, and they all involve the loosening and suctioning of fat cells through a small incision. The team can help you review each option and choose the appropriate type for your treatment.

What are my options for liposuction?

Each of the available liposuction treatments at Gynecology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Atlanta works in a slightly different way to loosen and remove unwanted fat. Your options include:

Vaser® liposuction

Vaser liposuction uses sound energy called ultrasonic vibrations to break apart your fat cells and detach them from surrounding tissues. Then, your surgeon sucks out the fat with a hollow tube called a cannula.

Smartlipo by Cynosure®

Smartlipo is an advanced liposuction treatment that uses energy from a laser fiber to disrupt and break apart your fat cells. The heat from the laser melts your fat, and your surgeon suctions it through a cannula to remove it.

Microcannula liposuction

During microcannula liposuction, your surgeon uses a tiny cannula instead of a traditional one to dislodge and remove small amounts of fat at a time. The result looks very natural, and the recovery is easier because of the lower amount of trauma to the area.

Does liposuction hurt?

To make sure that you’re comfortable during your liposuction procedure, the team at Gynecology and Cosmetic Surgery Center of Atlanta numbs the treatment area with tumescent anesthesia, a form of local anesthesia. They may also give you IV sedation to help you relax.

Tumescent anesthesia involves a large volume of liquid containing saline with lidocaine and epinephrine. Your surgeon pumps it into the fat beneath your skin where it makes your tissues numb for up to 18 hours.
